  1. “Is it over?” A girl with corn-rowed hair brought him a bowl of water and a clean rag.
    “It ain’t never over, but Carmen ain’t gonna bother you or your Ma no more.” The man’s face wasn’t any cleaner for having the blood and road dust washed off it.
    “Girl, go on and fetch this man some food.” The girl’s mother stuffed her own hair behind a kerchief.
    “Yes Mama!” The girl was young, not stupid, and went across the shack to bed.
    “Mister I…”
    “I cain’t be killing any more jealous wives, don’t you call on me again.”
