Not Since The Printing Press…

25 01 2011

¡Viva La Revolución!

Yep, I said it and I’m not the first. There is a true revolution happening in writing today. Like my title says, not since the printing press was invented have writers seen the freedom they now have to print their words the way they want to.

That last part is key: “the way they want to”. Not the way an editor wants, not the way a publisher wants, not the way an agent wants and not the way critics want, but the way they, as artists, want.

I’m, of course, talking about ebooks. Specifically fiction, whether flash, short, novella, novel or epic, ebooks give the writer the freedom to publish how they like and when they like. No longer are writers beholden to the whims of some outside entity that has their own agenda, psyche, tastes, lack of mental health or reasoning skills, or just hasn’t had their second cup of coffee. Writers get to make the decisions about their work just like back in the good old days.

Now, I have been on the fence with ebooks for quite a while. Why? Because it all hadn’t sunk in yet. Also, because there wasn’t enough evidence that ebooks were a viable business model. And that is a huge point for me: a viable business model. They gots to makes the cash or I ain’t interested. But now there are many authors that are making great sales with their ebooks: JA Konrath, Nathan Lowell, Lee Goldberg, Michael R. Sullivan, Amanda Hocking. All are killing it with ebook sales each month. The pudding has shown the proof. (For more details check out Mr. Konrath’s site and all the guest posts and links here)

So what does this mean for me?

It means I am now in the ebook biz! Check out the “Buy The Fiction” page above and give it a click or the links to the right. I have put out two short stories at $.99 each to test the market and get my feet wet. I want to understand the process well before I put out a novel.

Of course, just putting it up on the Kindle store doesn’t mean something will sell. You still have to have a good product, good cover and good marketing. Up the quality of all three to great and your sales will go up also. Now, I think I have good products. I know I have good covers. And the marketing? Well, that’s part of what I’m doing now with this post and blog. But, most of all, it’s what my podcast is now for!

In the beginning, when I first started podcasting, I was following the model of others: write book, podcast book, market podcast, get many subscriptions, capitalize on subscriptions and success of podcast to get publishers interested. And that’s what I did, resulting in my first novel, DEAD MECH, to be published. Then what? Well, that’s a whole other story or blogpost.

A year ago, the above made sense. Now? Not so much. The deal is that podcasters have been trying to figure out a way to monetize their podcasts and only a scant few (if any) have found success with it. Now, at least for fiction writers, the ebook makes monetization 100% possible! The podcast model is now full-on marketing for the fiction! Not just a way to market to publishers or agents, but direct marketing for the ebooks! Price those ebooks at the sweet price of $2.99-$4.99 for novels/collections/anthologies and $.99 for short stories and you have yourself a winner. All the marketing you have to do for the podcast in turn translates into marketing for the ebooks. Add some extra marketing for the ebooks and you can have yourself some decent sales given time.

I know many of you will say, “But what about…?’ Well, the “What about”s are the same as they ever were, whatever those may be. Reality doesn’t change, just our freedom to control our own distribution and marketing of our art. You still have to work hard, you still have to make sure you are putting quality out there and you still have to keep the hustle going indefinitely. That’s business folks, and if you can’t get on board with that then don’t bother with ebooks. Commerce is commerce and the time tested rules still apply.

Lucky for me, I LOVE commerce and I have a plan!

What is that plan? Well, that’s for another time. In the meantime I will keep posting about ebooks and insights I find as I start this journey. I’ll be blunt about sales (once I have some) so you can learn from my mistakes, successes, failures and luck.

This should be one heck of a fun ride and I look forward to sharing it with all of you!

Cheers!

What defines me…

6 12 2010

I figure for my first real blog post I would talk about my favorite subject: ME!
In all seriousness (stop laughing), I just want to take a few moments and explain my life and creative process. Everyone has their own ideas and expectations for writers, and before I started writing in earnest I did too, but very few people actually understand the reality of a writer’s life.

Here is my reality and my priorities (some of them):
I am a Father and a Husband. This is numero uno. There is no wiggle room in this priority. There isn’t enough money in the world to take this off the top of the list. I can honestly say that. Without my family there is zero point to any of this. This truly defines the way I work, what I work on and how much time I put into my work. Understand this when you wonder why I don’t work harder at podcasting, promotion, conventions, interviews, getting novels out quicker, etc. I have a full time job being a Father and Husband.

Next, I do work full time. This means the majority of my life is spent making a living other than writing. It would be great to write full time at some point, but the reality of that happening is slim. Why slim? There are many statistics regarding how many writers make a living at it, but the biggest is this: only between 5-10 percent of novelists make enough money to do it full time. Now think about how only 5-10 percent of all writers ever get a novel published and you can understand just how difficult it is to be a full time writer (novelist, at least, which is what I am).

So, when you take into account The Fam and the job, it’s amazing I get anything written at all.

Now, I have to be 100% honest. Even though I haven’t seen a penny of profit from any of my writing, money is my true motivation to write. GASP! I know, I know, I can hear so many of you saying, “It’s not about the art?”, “What about the creative process?”, “You don’t do it just to entertain?”. Nope. I am not an artist that can produce art for art’s sake. Never have been. I grew up in a very artistic household and was surrounded by art for art’s sake. Not my thing. Even when I would play with ceramics, I would make something functional: an incense holder, a bowl, a pen holder, etc. Now, this doesn’t mean I don’t believe in my art, or that I am a commercial whore. I will only write what I want to write and will not just crank something out for money’s sake. BUT, if I don’t feel an idea is commercially viable then I will shelve that idea and work on something I do feel is commercially viable. It’s just how I am wound.

Last, I am hedonistic in nature. If it isn’t fun for me then I’m not doing it. Now, being a Father, I know that there is stuff that HAS to be done. That’s just reality. But, really, if writing, podcasting, promotion, etc ever becomes more work than it’s worth, well, then that will be the end of the story. No more Jake Bible novels. I can honestly say that. Really.

With ALL of that said there are two certainties in my life: I love my family more than anything and will kick anyone’s ass that tries to come between me and them. And, I love to write. I truly, truly, truly love to write. I don’t plan on quitting either of these passions, so there really isn’t any risk of me getting divorced or splitting from the novel scene.

Do I sound like a bummer? I’m not. I am actually a hopeless dreamer. I believe in positive thought as the strongest force out there. No one ever got anything done by being a pessimist. Unless their goal is to bring everyone down, then they succeed all too often. I have high hopes for my life and writing and have VERY big dreams I plan on fulfilling. I don’t settle for partial realization. If I set my mind to something I will accomplish it. It’s just how I’m made up.

How is that for a first blog post? I think it lives up to my reputation for quality rambling. What do you think?

Feel free to chime in and take me to task if you want. Or agree 100% and be the sycophantic following I’ve always hoped for!

Thanks everyone for everything you do out there. Trust me, I appreciate the fact that I even have a forum to post my gobbledy-gook. I may sound like a self-involved wanker, but I do truly appreciate each and every person that has taken the time to support me and to read and/or listen to my work. Without you I’m just talking to air!

Cheers Y’all!

Jake’s at Horror Realm!

17 09 2010

Howdy Y’all!

Well, I’m at Horror Realm right now in Pittsburgh, PA. Hopefully I’m selling all of my books.

What does this mean to you? Well, it means no Friday Night Drabble Party or new podcast episode release. Sorry!

Due to circumstances WAY out of my control, I didn’t have a single free moment this week to prepare for anything other than the convention.

Maybe I’ll make it up to y’all next week with extra releases of both.

And, maybe I’ll see you at Horror Realm this weekend!

Cheers!
