I was directed to you by Scott Sigler and as someone who is interested in zombie stories AND and old Mech junkie, I wanted to give you a listen, but unfortunately the site you are using is saying that bandwidth allotments for the month are used up.
I think your podcast is great, the only problem I have with it, is that is is too jumpy. Sometimes it is hard to follow when subject changes every two or three sentences.
I’ve been re-listening to the episodes and there are some confusing parts. I’m taking that into account in future episodes. I have to remember that what’s on the page doesn’t always translate to audio. Thanks for listening and for the feedback!
Jake:
Loving DEAD MECH. You asked whether or not the latest episode works when the drabble blocks are all for the same chapter. The way you have handled that actually works quite well. I was able to concentrate more on the same scene and the pauses didn’t pull me out of the narrative at all. I think this is something you should try again and see if it works for other chapters as well.
Keep it going, man. Enjoying the hell out of it and I applaud you for the drabble experiment.
Thanks Paul! I’m glad to hear the format worked for you. I have about three other areas of the novel I plan on doing the same thing with. Thanks for the feedback. It really helps. Cheers!
Hey man, I love what you are doing with this AMAZING podcast. I was sent here by the Great Scott Sigler (FDO) i just wanted to leave my feedback with you, i think that you and Scott should write a story in collaboration, that would be amazing. you should ask him about writing something together. anyways
Keep up the good work,
Steven
Thanks Steven! That’s some high praise indeed. Scott Sigler has certainly set the bar high and hopefully I can rise above it someday. A guy’s gotta have dreams, right? Thanks again for the feedback. Cheers!
Thanks! New episode drops this Sunday evening. I’ll have a new one every two weeks. I hope to switch to a weekly schedule come summertime. I may need to buy more midnight oil! Glad you’re liking it. Cheers!
Enjoying the story a lot, I did find keeping all the characters straight in the first chapter when they were first introduced difficult because of the constant jumping without always a point of reference at the beginning of each section (think old Dukes of Hazard “meanwhile back at the ranch….”) But I also don’t know how I’d fit the references into the feel of the story.
BTW if you’re keeping track I came from Scott Sigler
I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying the story. I think you’ll find I control the jumpiness a little better as the story progresses. And thanks for letting me know you were referred by Sigler. I’ll have to thank that guy at some point. Thanks for the feedback and be sure and let me know how you like the rest of the episodes. Cheers!
A bit late to the DeadMech party but lovin’ the ride so far!
Thought I had audio equipment failure when I first listened, untill I found out what Drabble was. But it certainly giving the story a pace of it’s own and a fresh-take for a zombie story.
Glad you could make it. The drabble style can take some adjustment, but you’ll find I get better at the pacing as the story goes on. Keep the feedback coming as you get further along. Cheers!
About eating babies. Since energy can’t come from nothing, why not eat whatever food the mothers/babies get rather than eat the babies themselves? I know vegetarianism (I am not one) isn’t as gross as baby eating, but it would make more sense.
Simply put it’s because the culture is as much about brutality and violence as it is about survival.
Why do parents in this day and age give their 4 year olds Diet Coke? Or why do people still smoke cigarettes? Because that is how they were raised. For good or bad, it’s what they’ve learned and what they know.
Plus, it’s a Hell of a lot more fun to write about baby stew than about tuber stew.
Quick rant and sorry for the spoiler if any of you haven’t been caught up with the current episode.
Are you serious, the whole UDC armed forces are now nanotech zombies? : ( I mean besides the mech pilots of course but yeah, come on at least maybe a company of riflemen or a base that was too far out for the injections?
You got it wrong. The entire civilized population has been turned into nanotech zombies! Every last human being with a connected Reaper chip. Every last one.
A quick logic check the rookie still has a reaper chip and the pilots still have modified ones, those are still linked to the main system right?
The fanatics should just call in an airstrike on the postions given by the chips, I am sure the UDC has a fleet of UAV’s or UAS based systems plus the aircraft that should exsist if you have high tech mechs rolling about.
Come to think of it why would you even use mini-mechs for inteligence missions when you have a UAV?
But your logic is based on a huge assumption: aircraft of any kind exist. They don’t. Without giving away the sequel, I can say that atmospheric conditions in the wasteland would cripple any type of aircraft within minutes. The UDC didn’t even try to tackle the technology needed to overcome that obstacle, hence the dependence on the mechs and on trains, transports and ATVs for all transportation.
Plus, the tracking feature of the Reaper chips was really designed for city/state use. Close proximity. The expanse of the wasteland plays havoc with all types of transmissions and signals (no satelites either, so don’t even go there).
Great questions, insights and observations though. I do plan on Dead Mech becoming a series, so a lot of the loose ends will eventually be tied up.
As for a sequel, the answer is yes. BUT, I’ll have another novel between. I don’t want to totally get pigeon holed as the “Dead Mech Guy”. I’ll be making some announcements over the next few weeks, so stay tuned.
Great stuff, i really enjoy this, I only had one, hopefully constructive, criticism, the thing about baby stew not being an efficient way of providing food. The energy has to come from somewhere, the factor of 1:10 for food:weight and so on…
But i’m more anal than most on these issues, so I’ll let it roll. Maybe the wasteland has some really neurishing gross moss, plan and/or fungi that none can eat. The reason being that it is swarming with dormant larvae or eggs from paracites like the lancet fluke, making you into a thoughtless drone, just wanting to eat more to serve the life cycle of the parasite. The life cycle ending by the host being lead to said plant/fungi/moss, puking up his/her/its guts so as to release the parasites onto the host, which in turn gets to be eaten alive by the now grown-up atrocities of nature. They then reproduce asexually, lay new eggs in their growth of choice, and so the merry go-around continues…
The trick is to cook the infected ones, killing the parasies in the process, befor they turn their insides out, however the incubation time for the big pukefest takes, hmmm, years, say….?
Keep’em coming, looking forward to the development of the half-concious dead mech, you left us with a cliffhanger there, hehe.
You are right, the wasteland has many different things available nutritionally. But, cannibalism is about culture, not nutrition. The Boilers are they way they are because that’s what they know. They do have other food sources: roots, lichens, fungus, and, yes, probably insects or worms, but their cultural belief system is based on eating human flesh.
I’m a vegetarian, so I am fully aware of the energy ratio. But, that can be applied to all meat, not just human, yet our society and culture still insists on seeing animal protein as the only “nutritional” source of protein when it has been shown that that is not the case.
So, to fully respond: baby stew was important to the story to show the brutality of that culture. And to freak people out, which I think it has.
Thanks a ton for taking the time to comment and to listen! I really appreciate it.
I’m three episodes in and I’m really enjoying this podcast. I think your dialog and the interplay with the characters sounds very natural.
Unfortunately, I have a bit of a problem with your basic premise. The issue with pilots dying in their mechs has too many simple technological fixes for it to be a believable concern. Hooking up a simple heart rate monitor to thermite charges in the cockpit , or even adapting the remote detonation fail-safes NASA builds into rockets would keep the dead from continuing to operate the mechs.
I don’t think this is a deal-breaker, though. Nothing is foolproof. Faulty fail-safe devices could very well allow a few dead mech to exist. I just think that it would strengthen your narrative to include a nod to this sort of thing (maybe in the episode “info dump”) in order to help the reader suspend disbelief.
To address the failsafe issue, I can only say it is mentioned towards the end of the novel, but not fully explained. It’s one of the mysteries of the UDC!
Thanks for the input and feel free to let me know of anything else you find that doesn’t quite jibe.
I really enjoying your podcast, I’m a bit of a zombie nut and your little twist to the everyday zombie story works well.
The drabble format is very interesting and I love how it keeps the action moving even when there is no action, the constant switching of characters never leave a boring spot.
I’m very interested in seeing where you take this. It is kinda out there that a government, even a government formed in the aftermath of something like this, would willingly wipe out it’s whole population. Can’t wait to find out what’s really going on
Thanks! Oh, when you find out what’s really going on it’ll blow your mind. Well, it’ll at least make you say “wow”, I doubt your mind will actually explode…
Wow if we could take your story and apply it to the new Mechwarrior that is rumored to be coming out, it would be a great revival of the Mechwarrior franchise.
Just started listening to Dead Mech and I’m hooked. I haven’t really gotten all that far I’m listening to episode 4 right now so if you’ve already heard this sorry for beating a dead horse. The story and the characters are amazing. The only thing that I have find a little difficult to deal with is are the pauses and the jumping from story line to story line. It makes the flow of the story a little cumbersome at times. Other then that I love it. I tip my hat to you sir and your amazing story. Keep up the good work.
Thanks man! The pauses represent the spaces between drabbles. It really was the only way I could represent the drabble style. The flow gets better as the episodes go along. Let me know how you like the story as it progresses!
Jake, I was directed to your drabble-cast by a post at a modelling/wargaming site called LeadAventure.de. While zombies and post-apocolyptic stuff isn’t really my bag, I find your writing and readings both fun and engaging. Good stuff. I look forward to the episodes yet to come.
One small suggestion that I would offer-it might be helpful to listeners like me who have 1) a terrible memory for names and 2) disjointed listening time (i.e. ten minutes here, fifteen minutes there) to have some sort of character list on your site that would just include names and a sentence or two of info on each character. I only suggest that because after a break from listening of more than a few days, I start mixing up some of the characters. Maybe that’s just me!
In any case, all the best your continuing project.
That’s a great suggestion. I do have a ton of characters. I have to figure out a way to list them all without giving anything away. New characters show up all the way until the last chapter. I’m a sucker for new characters!
How about just setting up a wiki and populate it with what we know so far, then the fans can add new characters and update information as we find it out. Takes the workload off of you, but still allows those interested in help remembering who’s who to have the guide (assuming we’re also willing to keep it up.)
Scott Sigler did something like this and it seems to have worked very well for him.
Have to say when I first saw the concept zombie apocalyspe and Mechs that can’t work. Glad I kept the faith and download the novel. What can I say but excellant!!!!
Have spent all week catching up with episodes. Keep up the good work
Thanks! I’ll be attending and on a panel at my first con in May here in Asheville. It’s FANATICON, a comic book & pop culture convention. I do plan on hitting other conventions in the future to spread the word about Dead Mech. I’ll be sure and keep everybody posted as to where or when. Thanks for listening and posting. Cheers!
I heard about you from A Kovacs and Scott Sigler after I asked them for a good podcast to listen to and let me tell you, Dead Mech does not disappoint! This story is so awesome it’s hard to wait for Sunday to come. Just wanted to say great job and keep at it
Hi Jake, I love the story so far, I am up to Ep. 8. The only criticism I have so far is when you use “Masterses” to show possession or “Red Legses” when you simply have to say Masters mech or Red Legs attack etc. Otherwise, your concept is absolutely extraordinary and I am really looking forward to hearing more.
p. s. I found your podcast book on “Library of the Living Dead”
Hey John, thanks! You know, I had this debate with several people, including some teachers, and apparently either way is correct. I guess I just want to channel my inner Golem (My preciousesssss!) My big flaw is inconsistency. I don’t pronounce it that way everytime! At least it’s spelled right in the manuscript.
Glad Dr.Pus sent you my way.
Cheers!
any way you could put links to the promoted podcasts in the show notes? I can rarely understand URLs in the audio promos, and even if I could, I listen while driving/walking, so there isn’t a way for me to write it down.
No worries. I decided to keep the podomatic site minimal in case I changed podhosts. Which I’ll probably be doing soon due to bandwidth issues. Cheers!

John Stockvig(19:22:58) :
Thanks for the response Jake. Although considered apropos for single syllable names, it isn’t for 2 or more. like Chris’s works but just sounds awkward in cases like Xerxeses. Sorry, I am an old fart who learnt the pre-modern rules and my grandpa was a stickler for proper use of his second language.
Stepping down now, I just finished downloading Eps, 12-18 and the horror has struck. Now I am going to have to WAIT for new episodes.
I shudder.
Is “Dead Mech” going to appear in printed format?
Kudos to you and thanks for your hard work to keep us entertained gratis!!!
John
Hey John,
My goal is to certainly get Dead Mech into print and, hopefully, other formats. We shall see!
The next episode of Dead Mech will drop on Sunday, so you won’t have to wait too long!
Cheers,
Jake
Just finished episode 18 and it was great! How are you going to keep topping yourself?
By the way, I listen to your podcast as I do my long drive to and from work. I usually have a cup of coffee in my hand to keep going along. Luckily I didn’t last night when I heard that unique description of the “un-Racheal” coffee that was tasted by Jethro (It was him, wasn’t it?). I tried not to toss my cookies over that one!
Is Dead Mech going to be hitting up any Sci-Fi Conferences on the West Coast anytime soon?
Glad I can make the morning commute enjoyable! Yeah, the un-Rachel coffee line was fun to write.
I probably won’t be hitting any West Coast cons until I get Dead Mech in print. But, you never know…
Cheers!
I have a podcast that I listen to called Rocketboom.com. They do stories on all kinds of strange things, so I suggested they look into the current zombie-mania thing that has cropped up. I named Dead Mech as one of the best ones to listen to. Who knows, maybe they’ll call for an interview? A little more publicity couldn’t hurt, could it?
Thanks!
You know what’s funny? Of all the RPGs I participated in when I was a kid, I never played any of the mech based ones! I always wanted to since they obviously piqued my interest, but I never had the chance. Guess I took care of that itch, huh?
My audio books on my ipod all show the Dead Mech logo when being played!
If I figure out how this happens, I’ll let you know. It would be a lot cheaper than commercials.
By the way, chapter 18 was EXCELLENT. I loved the last line by the Doctor!
Weird! The power of Dead Mech is just too great! Glad you liked the ending of the episode. I’ve heard from a lot of people that they liked that line. Which is what I was hoping for. Cheers!
I love the podcast thanks well done on getting published. when dead mech does become print will you also sell a audio version? I can’t read print very well as I have a condition where I don’t see text clearly. I see paterns. The only colour of text I can see is red. as I really find podcasts like yours a real pleasure I’d like to pay for the story but the book is just going to remind me of how I can’t enjoy it. Also I belive your going to be writing a or some sequel Would you also consider writing an prologe as I would be intrerested to listen to that as I enjoyed the first episode but woul like the story to be told over a few podcasts? Thank you for a fantastic story can’t wait to hear more
I don’t think there will be time or resources to release an audio version right away. There will be an eBook version, so you could manipulate the text color. As for prequels? One step at a time. I need to get this book out first then do the sequel. We’ll see.
Twenty One was great! You had some more “classic” lines in there from the characters. Loved it!
In reference to the Post from Sam Smith, would it be too much to think of Dead Mech being done in a radio play form so each character would have his or her own voice and sound effect too? Not saying you reading isn’t great, but a full radio play would be so awesome!
Looking forward to next week’s episode. Good luck.
Thanks!
A radio play would be fun, but it is also a huge amount of work. It may be something down the line if I have time, resources and a producer. You never know…
Cheers!
Maybe you can reciprocate when my stuff is up there!
It’s coming.

Coughcool(23:01:43) :
I found Dead Mech around episode 7. I have finally got caught up. You’re doing a great job and the story has been fun to listen to. Thanks for the great entertainment. Looking forward to future works.
Glad you are liking it! Future works are already in process. I think everyone is going to like the new novel I’m writing. It’ll be some good scifi fun!
Cheers!
Hello
I am impressed. I don’t love the drabble format but the story line and caracters are really good. I download a lot of audio books, (4-8 a week from varies sites to make sure I have good books to listen to at work) and I wasn’t expecting much from this one. Had too many diffrent thinks to make work together, but I was truely impressed. Thanks for the story and I will be liiking forward to more of your work. I will also pass your name along to others to try to promote your work.
Thanks.
Wayne
Wow wow WOW!!!, I caught this podcast from another site, thought I try it out. WOW. Wasn’t sure about the whole zombie thing, I just like military sci fi but this was a great blend. At least you didn’t make the zombies have some type of redeeming feature that lead to the pilots starting to have “moral” dilemmas about waisting them. Just aim and shoot and stomp and kick and squeeze …. Can’t wait for the last episode and hopefully there is a sequel or???
Great work and thanks
Darren
Thanks! Yes, there will be a sequel or two. I’m having too much fun writing in this world to just drop it. Plus, I think a few fans would put a hit out on me! Thanks for listening! Cheers!
A really good story! You did an excellent job putting it all together. If this was your first try at this, and I think you said it was, then it was especially good.
Looking forward to more Dead Mech (and other stories) as soon as you can get them out there!
Long time listener first time ummm…. typer? commenter? I’m not sure what I am. First things first – I Love the novel. Not a big Zombies fan, not really much of a mech geek either, infact when I first heard the promo for this on Sigler’s podcast i only gave it a passing “meh.” but then Sigler went and dropped your co-authored piece of ‘The Crypt’ into his feed and you just blew me away.
So far yours is the best crypt story ever! And that is saying something because there are some top notch writers contributing to that thing. The character(s) you created were so real and visceral and emotionally accessible, you kinda got me a bit choked up at some point in the story, you made the reader / listener feel a sense of empathy with a character in a short short story, that shit don’t happen all that often man!
So I gave the Dead Mech a go and ended up getting totally hooked on it.
The story is just plain fun.
Also, I know you were a bit embarased by the original recording rig that you were using, but I personally that I had no problems with sound quality or with the production levels of the podcast. Admittedly you are no Norm Sherman, but then who the hell is? Your personal style of delivery is perfect for the setting you have created in this Novel, and ummmm….. you’ve just got a cool sounding storytime voice.
So I was just going to pop onto the forums and see if there was a place to post questions for the ‘end of season / epilogue Q & A session’. but I just ended up gushing like a silly little fan boy and rambling way too much, so I decided to copy and paste it into here instead of starting up a forum thread over there in the waste lands
Sooo….. about the end of season Q & A;
Are you going to do one? Do you have a specific place for those questions? Is it OK if I start up a thread in the forums? I think maybe you’ve mentioned how to go about submitting questions for a Q & A sometime but I’m not a terribly good listener. Maybe I should go check you Face book Fan page first I’ll go and do that now.
Hey Guy! Glad you got into the story!
And, wow, thanks for the Crypt praise! That is some high praise indeed considering the other writers involved.
As for Q&A, go to the forum and under Dead Mech is a Q&A thread. I’ll be recording tonight so get your questions in ASAP!
Cheers!
I’m glad to know there will be more Dead Mech after book 1, but I’m also really curious about what else you’re going to write. If it’s as awesome as DM, I absolutely want to hear it!
As a blind reader, I.E. a listener to many, many audiobooks, I have to say I really enjoy your podcasts. The intro and outro (new word for me) music for the episodes is perfect (I downloaded both songs), and your narration is actually better than on a lot of commercial titles I’ve heard. You said in one of your interviews that you give a ‘straight read’, but I think you manage to distinguish between the different characters very well, and very entertainingly. If you ever release an audio edition of DM I’ll definitely buy it.
That said, I also want to hear DM in Graphic Audio and I plugged it a couple of times at their website: http://www.graphicaudio.net
I’m afraid it got buried in the community pretty quickly though, and I have no idea how many people actually read about it. Still…doesn’t hurt to try…and to hope…
Thanks for all your hard work and talent and dedication and…um, how much did you say you were going to pay me again?…JUST KIDDING! Keep it up! THANKS!
Barney
PS: Payment to be made in the form of many, many more great tales from your brilliant, twisted imagination, and hey, seriously, take a look at Graphic Audio!
Jake- I loved the Drabble and the characters. This story swallowed me whole and brought me back as a true deader believer.
I was wondering if there is a place (besides the story) that I could get a physical character description of the players. I was hoping to do a 3D render of a few favorite team player like Harlow or the comander.
Thanks!
Hmmm, physical descriptions… Let me think on that. I purposely avoided physical descriptions, but eventually it’ll have to be done. I’ll keep you posted.
Cheers!
Hello all, and special greatings to you Mr. Bible
First i would like to say WOW. I have listen to many pod books, some good and some forgetable but i am eagerly waiting your novel in print (and in Hard back would be icing on the cake). I was a late comer to the story and feel for them that had to wait for the next recording to post. I wanted to say that your book was riveting. I would rank you with writers like J.C. Hutchins, Scott Sigler, Basil Sands and Tracy Hickman. I thank you for your creativity and bazarre sense of life that has crafted your writing style.
Pyrotect
P.S. I am a ex military member and an electronically / Mechcanically mind person taking advanced classes in both. There where several question on your Q&A session that were “lacking” in detail. I wanted to help and will be posting several items on your forum in the near future to trying and explain more than just it’s in the future (several of your consepts are dead on, just the “science” is off.)
P.S.S would love to see the Dead Mech made in to a TV series (May have to be cleaned up a bit, Ha ha) i would love to see the combind talents of you and Joss Whedon or J. Michael Straczynski could come up with.
(Mechs have been a naughing thought/wet dream in my brain for many years sense Mech Warrior Game)
I’d more than love DEAD MECH as a series! However, I think it needs to be on one of the pay channels like HBO, Showtime or Starz, otherwise it’ll lose it’s punch. I wouldn’t want it to be watered down or weak. Too many fans have come to love those foul mouthed, ultra violent characters. Of course, I say that now. NBC offers me a deal, I’d probably take it!
Thanks,
Jake
In your last Ramblin’s (liked the intro) you said that you were going to Horror Con in Pittsburgh. Will you need to travel for the book or visit some other events that require you to travel to neighboring states to make Dead Mech happen? I could provide some plane tickets for Southwest Airlines to anywhere you need to get to so you can keep that excellent writing flowing to get that book out there.
It would be my treat to pay back all those great podcasts you’ve given us!
PS= The outro you made was even better.
PPS – Any time travel ideas coming up in your brainstorms? That is my wife’s favorite. I need to gether hooked too.
I may be going to some other cons. Realy depends on life/schedule/funds. Shoot me an email at jakedbible at gmail.com (don’t forget the “d” between jake & bible) and let’s chat.
Glad you liked the intro/outro, they were just fun to do.
As for time travel? Yes, I have a fun idea for that, but it will be a while before I write it.
So, I just got a cold shrill after reading “It rolls down hill.” It was truly one of the most messed up drabbles I have read. AWESOME! is a good word to describe it.
Still a little sad that Dead Mech is over but the drabbles are freakin, thats right I said FREAKIN, sweet! Keep up the awesome work. WE LOVE IT!
Nope. Everything is in my head right now. I am in the process of designing a n RPG, but it will be a while before that us ready. I have three novels to write first! Hopefully it won’t be too long.
Cheers!
just started listening to Dead Mech today and wanted to let you know that I’m really enjoying it already and I’m looking forward to ploughing through the series. Nice to see a different take on the zombies, and I love the no-holds barred way you set the story up by totally screwing over the world.
Stuck a brief bit of pimpage up on my website, with any luck at least one of the 3 people who visit will check your stuff out
love your work it really get my creative juices going in my zombie work lol i never thought of gaint robots and zombies its going to be a classic. i also have one more thing to say.
Almost finished with Dead Mech and was very entertained. Thanks! Had a lot more depth than I thought it would. Strong story. You, Phil Rossi, Sigler, and J.C. Hutchins are the type to make me want to get off my lazy ass and write. Your narration skills need a bit of work but as someone else said “you are the author not a pro narrator.” Bet it was frustrating not to go full out when narrating (i.e. your quiet yells). Damn neighbors. One tip, check your casts before uploading to clean them up a bit. In a few episodes you let the intro music run in the background a couple of times before it ran out and it almost interfered with the narration. And, you had a few minutes of dead air at the end of one. I am not complaining, just trying to help. Good luck with this and future creations. One last thing, for a guy with the last name Bible you sure do curse a lot. Thanks again.
Thanks for the feedback. i tried fixing the files, but they wouldn’t upload and there’s only so much work I can put into a free product. I’ll be triple checking my next novel before submitting it. DEAD MECH was my virgin effort. As for the cursing, yep, it’s an art form in my family! Cheers!
Browsin thru itunes and came across Dead Mech a few weeks ago. LOVE IT!! Just need some merchandise to go with it (tshirts, bumper stickers, etc.). Keep up the good work!!!
Totally awsome. Can’t wait for more. This style must be extreamly consuming. You are the man!! Will check the links. I need a shirt with the cover shot let me know when you get them.
Jake, I just listened to Dead Mech the second time through and have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it again. The first time I couldn’t put it down and the second time was still the same. I love the other stuff you have been putting out too. The SFTA really make you think and even to an extent make you make up the rest in your head. Great stuff! Keep it up!
“Bible, Jake. Marked for termination on sight. Prepare to engage.” – UDC Trooper 24138
Hey there! I’ve been telling my friends about your story! With any luck you should be getting about fifty new downloads today. Also, quick question. Is that wind audio clip playing throughout the entire episode? I always hear it in quiet bits like pauses and such.
Anyhoo, chin up me boyo! Cheers and whatnot!
I used the wind as the ambient sound and then raised the levels during the breaks between drabbles. It’s tricky and not perfect. I’ll probably re-master the whole thing at some point. You know, when I find that “time” thing people talk about.
Thanks for spreading the word! That’s awesome!
Holy hell! The Americans is awesome! One thing though, it’s not a Drabble Novel, is it? Not that I mind.
One more thing, I prefer your style of reading books. It’s a lot more interesting. You do a great job of drawing me in. Much better than even Jim Dale!
Keep up the awesome work!
P.S. I downloaded Bethany and Dead Mech for my Kindle. *gives you the thumbs-up* I don’t know how you do it man, I really don’t.
Thanks, man! Nope, The Americans is not a Drabble novel. Just wasn’t going to work for the story. Plus, writing a Drabble novel is a very labor intensive process.
I’ll write another Drabble novel at some point.
Hi, I have just finished Dead Mech, and I have to say it was great.
I love Mecha, and the way the book is written is amazing. I look forward to another book in the series.
I’m almost done listening to Dead Mech and am dreading the end because it’s so good. I will be sad for this one to be done. I’ve never been a fan of drabble, but you’ve got me hooked. I’ll be sure to let everyone know that this has been one hell of a podcast ride. Thank you very much for bringing your fic to the masses.
Hi there, I just finished Dead Mech. I bought the e-book, then ordered the print version halfway through because I wanted it. I then bought the rest of your e-books… this book was fantastic on a lot of levels and I enjoyed the everloving hell out of it, I can’t wait for the next two. I went from zero to fan in about six pages. Well done.
loved your podcast so much i just brought both books and got my sons hooked on your podcast stories,i hope when your rich enough to own your own island you’ll keep on podcasting as it is a great format for hearing from authors like yourself, and others who would never get heard through mainstream publishing.
Great one of the best I have heard. Please do more. I was listening last Sunday when working and just at goooooood time my brother turned up. He was lucky I did not have a 50mil cannon. Keep up the good work
I am looking for your work in book form.
Hey Jake, I just wanted to tell you, I really enjoyed Dead Mech, And after being caught up with things, i found your The Americans story, and i was so happy when i found out it was a sidequel, I thought i should also tell you, I had this little idea involving zombies and aliens, And i listened to Dead Mech and i drew some major inspiration from that…
Anyway, a few questions about Dead Mech and The Americans:
1) Where baouts does The Americans start in Dead Mech? at the same time? or Maybe, midway through the story
2) If america fled to Europe, Do they know what’s going on? in terms of the Reaper chip etc.
3)So far, they don’t seem ver concerned about the Zombies, are there only in America? Or did they spread to other areas of the World?
Well, if I answered all those questions there’d be no need to write the books! The Americans and DEAD MECH take place simultaneously. You learn more at the end of The Americans and pretty much all will be revealed in the third book, Metal And Ash.
Ahh well, The Americans seems to be answering them, themselves. I was left saying “Holy shit” over and over again in Ep. 22 and the few before it, I think I see where it’s going, but there is still confusion, especially with Beth, I can’t tell if she’s a direct clone of Rachel or not…anyway, I imagine the Books will answer the questions…
Also. I’ve been telling all my friends all over the globe about the
Books, so you can get your new floor and Ramen
I was directed to you by Scott Sigler and as someone who is interested in zombie stories AND and old Mech junkie, I wanted to give you a listen, but unfortunately the site you are using is saying that bandwidth allotments for the month are used up.
Bandwidth issues have been dealt with. Download away!
Jake,
Great stuff! Keep it comming!
Don’t worry, there are plenty more episodes on the way! Thanks!
Jake
Really got me hooked, well done keep up the good work. Listened to first 7 episodes back to back could not put the ipod down
looking forward to a mechtastic 2010
That’s awesome! Thanks. 2010 will be the year of Dead Mech! Cheers!
Are you familiar with Andersen Prunty?
Just checked out his site. Looks like great stuff. He is in the category of other off-beat/bizarro authors I like. Thanks for the heads up!
Cheers.
Cheers!
I’m really enjoying this one.
Got wind of it listening to Sigler’s Cryptmas specials.
I like the “Zombie in the Circuitry” take on “Ghost in the Shell” sci-fi that you’re building up towards.
Excellent! I am stoked you’re enjoying it. Let me know what you think of future episodes. There’s still alot of story to cover. Cheers!
Great story and idea. Burn the midnight oil and pump out some more!
Thanks! New episode drops this Sunday evening. I’ll have a new one every two weeks. I hope to switch to a weekly schedule come summertime. I may need to buy more midnight oil! Glad you’re liking it. Cheers!
Jake – Robots and Zombies! What could be better!? Enjoying the hell out of it, keep em coming!
-zed
Thanks Zed! And don’t worry, there’s plenty more to come!
Cheers!
Nice work man, you found a new way to explore the zombie genre. Not an easy task. I’m looking forward to more.
Jason Warden – editor
The ShadowCast Audio Anthology
Thanks Jason. And don’t worry, I’m working hard to crank out more episodes! Cheers!
I love the story but i have to keep going back to clear things up! Things are a bit confusing at times, especially the first two episodes.
Yeah, first two episodes are rough. It gets less jumpy in the latter episodes. Thanks for the feedback. Cheers!
A bit late to the DeadMech party but lovin’ the ride so far!
Thought I had audio equipment failure when I first listened, untill I found out what Drabble was. But it certainly giving the story a pace of it’s own and a fresh-take for a zombie story.
Bump from Paul Elard Cooley got me onto the feed.
Cheers!
Excellent question!
Thanks for the comment! Keep ‘em coming!
Cheers!
Thanks for the comments and keep them coming!
Cheers!
Siger also reffered me
Fave line so far has to be…
“My reality is based on a headshot is a killshot.”
Planned sequel?
@nilling
Thanks. That was a fun line to write.
As for a sequel, the answer is yes. BUT, I’ll have another novel between. I don’t want to totally get pigeon holed as the “Dead Mech Guy”. I’ll be making some announcements over the next few weeks, so stay tuned.
Cheers,
Jake
Cheers!
Jake
In that case, let’s hope multiculturalism of this particular kind doesn’t spread beyond the drabblesphere, hehe
- V.
Thanks, I’m glad your liking it so far.
To address the failsafe issue, I can only say it is mentioned towards the end of the novel, but not fully explained. It’s one of the mysteries of the UDC!
Thanks for the input and feel free to let me know of anything else you find that doesn’t quite jibe.
Cheers!
Thanks for commenting!
Cheers!
Wow if we could take your story and apply it to the new Mechwarrior that is rumored to be coming out, it would be a great revival of the Mechwarrior franchise.
Nice work and thank you for your continued work.
Brett
That would be awesome!
Jake
Just started listening to Dead Mech and I’m hooked. I haven’t really gotten all that far I’m listening to episode 4 right now so if you’ve already heard this sorry for beating a dead horse. The story and the characters are amazing. The only thing that I have find a little difficult to deal with is are the pauses and the jumping from story line to story line. It makes the flow of the story a little cumbersome at times. Other then that I love it. I tip my hat to you sir and your amazing story. Keep up the good work.
Joel
Thanks man! The pauses represent the spaces between drabbles. It really was the only way I could represent the drabble style. The flow gets better as the episodes go along. Let me know how you like the story as it progresses!
Cheers!
Jake
Cheers!
Jake
How about just setting up a wiki and populate it with what we know so far, then the fans can add new characters and update information as we find it out. Takes the workload off of you, but still allows those interested in help remembering who’s who to have the guide (assuming we’re also willing to keep it up.)
Scott Sigler did something like this and it seems to have worked very well for him.
Great idea! I’ll look into that. Thanks!
I would second the request for a who’s who list….
Jake,
Have to say when I first saw the concept zombie apocalyspe and Mechs that can’t work. Glad I kept the faith and download the novel. What can I say but excellant!!!!
Have spent all week catching up with episodes. Keep up the good work
Thanks
Matt
Thanks Matt! Glad you decided to give it a try!
HEY!
Great show! I look forward to it every week. More people need to know about it. Do you go to Sci-Fi shows to advertise?
Keep up the good work and I look forward to more stories from Dead Mech and whatever else you write.
Just wanted to say great job and keep at it
Thanks Zac! And a big thanks to the FDØ and Director of Doom for the recomendation. I’m glad they pointed you in my direction. Cheers!
Thanks Jake!
Hey John, thanks! You know, I had this debate with several people, including some teachers, and apparently either way is correct. I guess I just want to channel my inner Golem (My preciousesssss!)
My big flaw is inconsistency.
They are in there under Promos in each blog post announcing the new episode.
Wow, so it is. I feel stupid now. I was only looking at the podomatic posts instead of the ones here. Sorry!
No worries. I decided to keep the podomatic site minimal in case I changed podhosts. Which I’ll probably be doing soon due to bandwidth issues. Cheers!
Cheers,
Jake
great story, heard your pro-mo on one of the FDO’s podcasts and loved your story for The Crypt, keep up the good work
Thanks Robert!
Hey thanks! I’ll take all the publicity I can get!
Hey,
Heard about Dead Mech on Scott Siglers podcast. I’m glad I checked it out….Loving it.
Please keep pod casting and thanks for the entertainment!!!
Gotta love that Sigler! Glad he could steer you my way. As long as people like what I’m writing, I’ll keep podcasting. Thanks for listening! Cheers!
Hey Jake
Just started listening.
Episode 3 is playing right now as I type this.
Keep it up man – it’s good so far.
Reminds me of an old game I played on the PC – Mechwarrior.
N
Thanks!
You know what’s funny? Of all the RPGs I participated in when I was a kid, I never played any of the mech based ones! I always wanted to since they obviously piqued my interest, but I never had the chance. Guess I took care of that itch, huh?
Cheers!
Hi Jake,
My Podcast in haunted by Dead Mech!
My audio books on my ipod all show the Dead Mech logo when being played!
If I figure out how this happens, I’ll let you know. It would be a lot cheaper than commercials.
By the way, chapter 18 was EXCELLENT. I loved the last line by the Doctor!
Just Jim

Weird! The power of Dead Mech is just too great! Glad you liked the ending of the episode. I’ve heard from a lot of people that they liked that line. Which is what I was hoping for. Cheers!
Hey,
Like many others, it was the FDO that directed me to your awesome podcast. Really enjoying it, you’ve done some great work.
Looking forward to the rest of the story!
Cheers,
Stephen
Great! Welcome to the party! It’s a sick, sick party, but there will be cupcakes…
Cupcakes, thats me sold!
Didn’t understand your format at first. I was wondering why your were “pausing” regularly. Your explanation of the drabble format cleared that up.
Great story…keep ‘em coming.
Thanks! Yeah, sorry it took me so long to explain the Drabble novel concept. I was so young when I started.
You keep topping yourself with every chapter! Twenty was great. Keep ‘em coming!
Thanks! That’s great to hear! Only six more episodes. I think I can keep that momentum going.
We’ll see.
Thanks!
Cheers,
Jake
Twenty One was great! You had some more “classic” lines in there from the characters. Loved it!
In reference to the Post from Sam Smith, would it be too much to think of Dead Mech being done in a radio play form so each character would have his or her own voice and sound effect too? Not saying you reading isn’t great, but a full radio play would be so awesome!
Looking forward to next week’s episode. Good luck.
Thanks!
A radio play would be fun, but it is also a huge amount of work. It may be something down the line if I have time, resources and a producer. You never know…
Cheers!
Still sounding good my friend!
Awesome! Thanks man!
Hey, thanks for posting the link to my piece about ‘Dead Mech’
You bet! Thanks for writing it!
Maybe you can reciprocate when my stuff is up there!
It’s coming.
Cheers!
Just listened to episode 24 – oh f**k!
Thanks.
Wayne
Thanks Wayne! I’m glad I won you over! Cheers!
Is it Sunday yet? The wait is killin’ me!
Almost there!
Thanks for the entertainment.
Thanks man! I’ll be getting more fiction out there ASAP!
Hey there Jake,
Long time listener first time ummm…. typer?
Sooo….. about the end of season Q & A;
Are you going to do one? Do you have a specific place for those questions? Is it OK if I start up a thread in the forums? I think maybe you’ve mentioned how to go about submitting questions for a Q & A sometime but I’m not a terribly good listener. Maybe I should go check you Face book Fan page first I’ll go and do that now.
Sincerely,
Guy
Hey Guy! Glad you got into the story!
And, wow, thanks for the Crypt praise! That is some high praise indeed considering the other writers involved.
As for Q&A, go to the forum and under Dead Mech is a Q&A thread. I’ll be recording tonight so get your questions in ASAP!
Cheers!
Great ending! Overall a very impressive story. Looking forward to seeing it in print. Good luck with it.
Hey Jake!
That said, I also want to hear DM in Graphic Audio and I plugged it a couple of times at their website:
http://www.graphicaudio.net
I’m afraid it got buried in the community pretty quickly though, and I have no idea how many people actually read about it. Still…doesn’t hurt to try…and to hope…
Thanks for all your hard work and talent and dedication and…um, how much did you say you were going to pay me again?…JUST KIDDING! Keep it up! THANKS!
Barney
PS: Payment to be made in the form of many, many more great tales from your brilliant, twisted imagination, and hey, seriously, take a look at Graphic Audio!
Thanks! I do have more audio fiction coming. Some day I’ll produce & record a DM audiobook, but for right now the podcast is all there is. Cheers!
PS- Check is in the mail.
Hey thanks! That’s some fine company you’ve put me with. I’m looking forward to you posts regarding my “science”. Every little bit helps.
Cheers!
Thanks,
Jake
Jake,
Just don’t give it over to Fox TV. They’d only want to animated it and add a talking dog to it!
Seriously, I’m looking forward to your next series (whatever that may be) and look forward to the Friday Night Drabble Party.
Good luck with the book project.
Regards,
Just Jim
Exactly! I think I’ve learned from Joss Whedon that FOX is where quality goes to die!
I thought the Drabble of the 23rd was an interesting theme. Pretty cool!
Thanks! It was fun to write!
Cheers!
WE LOVE IT!
Thanks Dan! Good to know people are diggin’ the regular drabbles. Don’t worry, though, there will be more DEAD MECH down the road.
Cheers!
Hey Mr. Bible, I just ordered my copy of Dead Mech!
I cant wait to get it!!!
Looking forward to the next chapter in the saga.
Keep up the sick work.
Right on! Thanks Chaz.
Cheers!
Great seeing you at Horror Realm. I added DEAD MECH to my Authors bookstore over at Exit66.net, along with other titles from the convention…
Wow! Thanks, that is great!
It was good seeing you too and I hope we can hang and chat some in the future.
Cheers!
Watched the trailer – nice work.

Are the specs for mechs (and transports) listed anywhere? I like to make variants for my games and there are possibilities.
What weapons do they have?
What defenses?
Thanks,
Mike
Nope. Everything is in my head right now. I am in the process of designing a n RPG, but it will be a while before that us ready. I have three novels to write first! Hopefully it won’t be too long.
Cheers!
Dude, get Leather Belts and Wood Spoons over the pseudopod right NOW! That was excellent and they would love it, I think!
That’s a great idea! I’ll see what I can work out. Cheers!
Hi Jake, I really enjoyed the Dead Robots Society episode with you and Paul.
Well done.
N
Thanks!
Hey Jake,
just started listening to Dead Mech today and wanted to let you know that I’m really enjoying it already and I’m looking forward to ploughing through the series. Nice to see a different take on the zombies, and I love the no-holds barred way you set the story up by totally screwing over the world.
Stuck a brief bit of pimpage up on my website, with any luck at least one of the 3 people who visit will check your stuff out
Awesome! Thanks!
love your work it really get my creative juices going in my zombie work lol i never thought of gaint robots and zombies its going to be a classic. i also have one more thing to say.
the cow say Moo kid!
he he… cow goes moo… Love that line. Thanks!
Jake,
Almost finished with Dead Mech and was very entertained.
“Jazz hands, Bitches!”
Thanks! I had merchandise at one point, but the quality was low. Im working on a new source.
Glad you found DM!
Cheers!
Totally awsome. Can’t wait for more. This style must be extreamly consuming. You are the man!! Will check the links. I need a shirt with the cover shot let me know when you get them.
Troy
Thanks Troy! The drabble style is a very time consuming way to write a novel, but one hell of a lot of fun! Cheers!
I heard about you and dead mech through sigler and love it….being a nig zombie fan the addition of the mech side really was interesting….keep it up…..
Thanks! Glad you made it my way! Enjoy!
Keep it up!
Right on, Matt! That’s means a lot to me. Cheers!
Pockets, the Random Insanity Guy.
I used the wind as the ambient sound and then raised the levels during the breaks between drabbles. It’s tricky and not perfect. I’ll probably re-master the whole thing at some point. You know, when I find that “time” thing people talk about.
Thanks for spreading the word! That’s awesome!
Cheers!
Pockets
Thanks, man! Nope, The Americans is not a Drabble novel. Just wasn’t going to work for the story. Plus, writing a Drabble novel is a very labor intensive process.
I’ll write another Drabble novel at some point.
Cheers!
Hi, I have just finished Dead Mech, and I have to say it was great.
I love Mecha, and the way the book is written is amazing. I look forward to another book in the series.
Right on! The Americans will be available in ebook and print sometime this summer. I’ll be sure and keep everyone posted.
Cheers!
And thank you for listening!
Cheers for featuring the teaser promo for my upcoming podcast novel, ‘Jimmy and the Black Wind’.
Stay Alive Jake
from Neil.
You bet, brother!
Well done.
Right on! Thanks! The Americans will be out at the end of the Summer, so be on the lookout for that. Cheers!-Jake
loved your podcast so much i just brought both books and got my sons hooked on your podcast stories,i hope when your rich enough to own your own island you’ll keep on podcasting as it is a great format for hearing from authors like yourself, and others who would never get heard through mainstream publishing.
That’s great! Thanks for finding me and reaching out. I hope I can keep podcasting too! Cheers!
Great one of the best I have heard. Please do more. I was listening last Sunday when working and just at goooooood time my brother turned up. He was lucky I did not have a 50mil cannon. Keep up the good work
I am looking for your work in book form.
Thanks! All links to the ebooks and print versions are available on the BUY THE FICTION page. Dive right in! Cheers!
Hope you can answer
-Adam
Well, if I answered all those questions there’d be no need to write the books!
The Americans and DEAD MECH take place simultaneously. You learn more at the end of The Americans and pretty much all will be revealed in the third book, Metal And Ash.
Thanks for reaching out!
Cheers!
Hey, your talk and information @ fanaticon 2 was a great help in making my book a reality. Thanks for the help.
