    Late Night Crowd

    “That’s $7.50,” the clerk said, her hip cocked to the side, bored eyes watching the man across from her. “Hello?”

    Trench coat. Hat pulled down shadowing his face. Leather gloves. Two colas and a bag of pork rinds on the counter.

    “$7.50?” the man asked, his voice thin, reedy.

    “Yeah,” the clerk said. She leaned forward and repeated, very slowly, “Seven. Fifty.”

    “Oh,” the man said. “Sorry.”

    He turned and shuffled away without his snacks.

    “Weirdos,” the clerk said then the smell hit her and she leaned over the counter. “Great. Another slime trail. I hate the late night crowd.”

    The combatants circled each other.

    Their weapons gleamed in the harsh sunlight as the sweat on their shoulders magnified the rays, the red turning to crimson skin already blistered badly. Neither man blinked, afraid the other would strike first.

    No crowd. They’d left. The men only circled. The small crowd that had gathered got bored quickly. The first few minutes were exciting, but the second few not so much. Hours later, days later, the men still only circled.

    The sun began to set. Again. It was if it had grown bored, finally calling it quits.

    The combatants circled each other.

  • Writing In Suburbia #39: Compare And Contrast!

    It’s back, yo! More Writing In Suburbia for your masochistic writing aspirations. Summer break was fun, but time to get back to analyzing the always confusing career of professional writing!

    In this episode I talk about my new three book deal with Bell Bridge Books! Three book deal! Woo hoo! I compare and contrast what it’s like working with my current publishers, especially Severed Press, with my expectations of working with Bell Bridge Books. I also explain my reasoning behind signing with a new publisher instead of only staying with Severed.

  • Announcement: Signed a 3 Book Deal With Bell Bridge Books!

    That’s right, folks! As stated in my ever so vague title, I have signed a 3 book deal with Bell Bridge Books, an imprint of BelleBooks!

    Bell Bridge/BelleBooks is a small publisher that has been putting out consistently great work for the past sixteen years. That’s a nice track record for a small publisher which is why I considered signing with them. As a dozen new small presses enter the marketplace each year, finding one that has actual longevity and sales is a plus.

    The deal is for three books: one stand-alone urban fantasy novel and two urban fantasy novels in the same series (although they will be stand-alones and not dependent on each other). They’ll be published over the next year/year and half, so be on the lookout for announcements!

    What’s the first novel? Well, I’m glad you asked!

    It’s actually an idea I have been playing with for some time. Here’s the pitch I proposed that got me the gig:

    “Stone Cold Bastards–
    Genre: urban fantasy/action adventure
    Imagine the Dirty Dozen as a team of gargoyles that must defend their Sanctuary against a raving horde of demon-possessed humans that want nothing more than the destruction of the entire human race and all that is good. Imagine that.
    Stone Cold Bastards is set in a world where Hell has released its demons, leaving most of humanity a puke-spewing, blue-skinned, head-spinning mess. Humanity’s last hope? A team of misfit gargoyles, come alive and ready for battle during the End of Days. Unfortunately the gargoyles could care less if humanity is wiped out. The only thing they will fight for is their Sanctuary that they had perched on for centuries as stone carvings. Luckily for some survivors that have found the Sanctuary, the gargoyles’ protection extends to everyone that can make it inside the walls and away from the demon hordes.
    But when a wandering gargoyle and a small child, who apparently holds the last hope for humanity, show up at the Sanctuary, things get tricky. Will they be given protection or left out in the Hell that Earth has become?
    Stone Cold Bastards offers rip roaring action, over the top violence, and pulpy good fun of the Lee Marvin kind in an urban fantasy setting.”

    How’s that work for ya? As soon as I have a publication date, I’ll let you know!

    As for the other two novels, they’ll be urban fantasy also since that is a genre that Bell Bridge has found quite a lot of success with. Announcements for those will be soon.

    Why’d I sign with another publisher when I already work with Severed Press and Permuted Press? Good question.
