    Hug Me And Hold Me

    The house creaked something fierce. That is the biggest memory I have of it. The never ending creaking.

    So when a storm kicked up, well, hoowee, the symphony would begin.

    And the voices.

    “Papa?”

    “Yes, Lizzy?”

    “What are they sayin’?”

    “Oh, Lizzy, don’t ya worry none about them. The voices cain’t harm ya.”

    “Are ya sure, Papa?”

    “Yep… Sure as sugar.”

    That always made me giggle. Sure as sugar. I never knew what it meant. Papa had so many sayings.

    “Sure…as…sugar…”

    “Papa!”

    “Come here, littlun’.”

    He’d hug me and hold until the voices stopped or I fell asleep.

    Not A Good First Day

    Elijah stepped into the room, ready for his first day of work.

    No one there.

    “Hello?”

    No answer.

    Weird.

    He heard some screams then a loud crash from down in the street. Elijah furrowed his brow and went to look. Unfortunately, the only window on the floor was in his new boss’s office. After some hesitancy, he sucked it up and went in.

    “Oh…”

    The scene below was not so good. People running and crying. Things chasing them, catching them, killing them, eating them.

    Not a good first day.

    “Huh… I better start coffee. Wonder where the break room is?”

    A Small Woman

    “Mommy!”

    Tera sprinted across the grass, her feet slipping in the damp dew of the early morning. Her lungs burned and her calves had begun to cramp, but she didn’t dare slow.

    “Mommy!”

    Her only thoughts were to get to her daughter before that hatch closed. As if she could do anything against the machine that had come for the children. As if a small woman, petite since birth, could fight off the empire and take back the thing most precious to her in the world.

    “Mommy!”

    Tera screamed as the armored truck pulled away, spitting gravel in her face.

    Hard Philosophy

    A punch to the head was better than a kick to the balls.

    It was a philosophy I’d lived by for most of my life. Hard to fault the logic in it.

    Unless the punch to the head is done by a seven-foot tall, monster of a man. Fists like bowling balls. Heavy and solid. Solid enough to knock me halfway across the room and want to cry for my mommy.

    Of course, my loaded pistol was better than his fist. Hard philosophy to learn for a big guy like that. I had no problem teaching it to him.
