    Control
    By
    Jake Bible

Even at full throttle, Naomi couldn’t outrun the Civics. Those dual-engine vehics simply had too much power; more horses in one engine than Naomi could coax from her entire vehic.

But power wasn’t everything. The problem with Civics and their vehics, was the State-paid losers never learned how to drive. Truly drive. They could push down on the diesel, sirens blaring, but that was it.

Naomi was a mechanic. The last of a great line. She knew that control meant as much as horses.

She aimed for the twists and turns of the hills and didn’t look back.

    Every Last One
    By
    Jake Bible

Hill threw himself behind the wall, his left hand scrambling at his belt for an extra magazine, the slide locked back on his Beretta for the third time that night.

    Hill’s hand continued to scramble.

“No,” he whispered as he looked down at his waist to see he’d already used every last magazine. Every last one.

He rested the back of his head against the wall. Hill knew he couldn’t outrun the men on his tail. And a bullet in the back was no way to die.

A shout. Hill nodded. He stepped away from the wall and said goodbye.

    The Pawn
    By
    Jake Bible

The pawn was slid across the picnic table. Black stone of some sort.

Cort didn’t care what the chess piece was made of. He only cared what name was etched into the bottom. He checked and frowned.

“You sure?” Cort asked the round-faced man that stared at him from across the table. “Can’t go back from this.”

    The round-faced man nodded.

“Your funeral,” Cort said and smiled. The smile was not returned. Cort shrugged. “It’ll be done tomorrow tonight.”

The round-faced man left. Cort watched him go and tucked the pawn away.

    Time to get to work.

    Ran No More
    By
    Jake Bible

Tony ran as fast as he could. Which wasn’t very damn fast since he was missing a good twenty percent of his right thigh. A whole chunk. Gone. Bitten right out by what looked like a fifth grader.

But, Tony still ran. He hobbled his scrawny ass across the street, well aware of the monsters only half a block back that were hot on that ass.

“Let me in!” he shouted as he slammed his shoulder into the apartment building’s door. “Let me in!”

No one replied. No one came to see. No one opened up.

    Tony ran no more.

    New Boots
    By
    Jake Bible

Her boots were slick with their blood.

The intricate stitching, which once had been ivory white, was stained a deep pink. Dee stared down at the boots, new by only a couple of days, and frowned. That shit didn’t come out.

Too late to do anything. The stitching would stay that color, maybe fade a little over time, but for the foreseeable future, she’d have pink stitching in her black boots.

Dee holstered her pistol and lit a cigar, puffing hard to get it glowing, then tapped ash on her main target’s slack face.

“Vaya con Dios, bitch,” she said.
